Château Kefraya

Located in the heart of the Bekaa Valley, Lebanon’s most renowned wine region, Château Kefraya is synonymous with excellence, tradition, and innovation in the world of premium wines. This historic winery, owned by the Bustros family for generations, combines a rich heritage with modern viticulture techniques to produce world-class wines.

A Rich Heritage and Visionary Founding

The story of Château Kefraya begins in 1946, when Michel de Bustros, a visionary and passionate winemaker, built the estate on an ancient man-made hill—a strategic location historically used by the Romans to observe troop movements. The first vines were planted in 1951, and despite the challenges of the Lebanese Civil War (1975–1990), the winery produced its first estate wine in 1979, made entirely from grapes grown in its own vineyards.

Over the years, Château Kefraya gained international recognition: the “Les Coteaux de Kefraya” 1982 and 1983 vintages won the winery’s first medals, and in 1997, the renowned American wine critic Robert Parker awarded the Comte de M 1996 a score of 91/100—a milestone that confirmed the winery’s global reputation. Today, Château Kefraya wines are enjoyed in more than 40 countries across five continents.

The Terroir of Château Kefraya

The secret behind the exceptional wines of Château Kefraya lies in the unique terroir of the Bekaa Valley. The vineyards stretch across 300 hectares of terraced slopes, reaching up to 1,000 meters above sea level at the foot of Mount Barouk. The estate is crossed by the Yammouneh tectonic fault, resulting in a great variety of soils ranging from clay-limestone and clay-chalk to sandy and gravel-rich compositions.

Thanks to excellent sun exposure and the natural absence of irrigation, the grapes ripen slowly and harmoniously, producing concentrated flavors and natural balance in the wines. The average yield is carefully limited to 35 hectoliters per hectare, while the vineyards maintain a planting density of 4,000 vines per hectare.

Diverse Grape Varieties and Innovative Blends

Château Kefraya is renowned for its broad range of international and local grape varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Chardonnay, Viognier, Carménère, Marselan, and Muscat à Petits Grains. Indigenous Lebanese varieties such as Obeidi, Merwah, and Mekssessé are also cultivated, while historical red grapes like Assouad Karech and Asmi Noir have been rediscovered thanks to years of terroir research.

The winery also offers organic and vegan wines, emphasizing its commitment to sustainable viticulture and respect for the environment.

The Art of Vinification and Blending

Every bottle of Château Kefraya is the result of a thoughtful blend of tradition and modern technology. The grapes are hand-harvested, carefully selected on an optical sorting table, and vinified separately by micro-parcel. The wines then age in French oak barrels or clay amphorae, honoring the Phoenician and Roman legacy of winemaking.

Today, Château Kefraya is internationally celebrated for premium Lebanese wines that express the unique character of the Bekaa Valley. Whether you choose a rich red wine, a refined white wine, or an elegant blend, each bottle tells the story of an estate that honors its heritage, nurtures its grapes, and strives for the highest quality.
