Wine Veltlínské Zelené grape

Veltlínské Zelené, internationally better known as Grüner Veltliner, is one of the most distinctive white grape varieties from Central Europe. With its fresh aromas, refined flavor, and versatile wine styles, this grape has secured a prominent place in the wine world. It is especially regarded as a jewel of white wine culture in Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.

Origin and History of Veltlínské Zelené

The name Veltlínské Zelené literally means “green Veltliner” and refers to the grape’s light green hue. Historically, this variety originated in Austria, with possible connections to the Italian Valtellina region. Genetic research suggests that Veltlínské Zelené is a cross between Traminer and an ancient regional variety. Since its official registration in the 1940s, the grape has been recognized worldwide as a high-quality white wine variety.

Cultivation and Winemaking

Veltlínské Zelené thrives best in continental climates and grows on a range of soils, from loess to limestone-rich grounds. The grape ripens mid-late, with harvest usually taking place in October. To achieve optimal quality, yields are often controlled, as the grape can otherwise produce too much fruit. Its disease resistance is average: the variety is susceptible to powdery mildew but shows good tolerance to rot (Botrytis).

Key Wine Regions:

Austria
The core region for Veltlínské Zelené is Austria, particularly the Wachau, Kamptal, and Kremstal regions. Here, it is the most widely planted white grape, producing both fresh everyday wines and complex premium wines.

Czech Republic
In Moravia, around Znojmo, Mikulov, and Velké Pavlovice, the grape grows under the name Veltlínské Zelené. Approximately 7.5% of Czech wine production comes from this variety.

Slovakia
The grape is also popular in Slovakia, forming an important base for high-quality local white wines.
