Telavi Wine Cellar

In the heart of the Alazani Valley lies Telavi, the largest city in Kakheti. It is here, on the foothills leading toward the mountains, that Telavi Wine Cellar was founded in 1915. For more than a century, the winery has combined innovation with respect for tradition. Its wines reflect the diversity of local viticulture and terroir and contribute to the global recognition of Georgian wine.

At Telavi Wine Cellar, modern technologies are seamlessly integrated with traditional methods. Stainless steel insulated tanks, pneumatic presses, gentle pumps, and an extensive temperature-control system work hand in hand with oak barrels, barriques, and the centuries-old Georgian qvevri—clay vessels buried in the earth of the historic Marani. This fusion of tradition and modernity ensures a perfect balance between innovation and the preservation of authentic wine characteristics.

Facilities

The wine estate is carefully designed to support the entire production process: from receiving freshly harvested grapes, through filtration and stabilization, to fermentation and storage. The eastern wing houses the bottling line and cooling rooms, while the western wing contains the cellars for white wines, barriques, and storage. Outside, fermentation tanks for red wines are located, which are used for stabilization during the winter. Recently, a new two-story wine cellar was completed, providing additional space for aging both red and white wines under constant temperature and humidity, directly adjacent to our historic Marani and the estate with its vineyards and garden.

Vineyards

Telavi Wine Cellar owns some of the most iconic vineyards in Kakheti:

  • Kondoli Vineyards: Located on the right bank of the Alazani River at 350–450 meters above sea level. This historic 300-hectare vineyard lies within the Tsinandali PDO and has been known since 1745 thanks to the Georgian historian Vakhushti Batonishvili. With 70% red and 30% white grape varieties—primarily local ones such as Saperavi, Rkatsiteli, Alexandrouli, Mtsvane, and Kisi, as well as international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Chardonnay, and Riesling—this vineyard forms the core of our premium wines.
  • Kudigora Vineyard: 30.5 hectares exclusively planted with the Saperavi grape, located in the renowned Kindzmarauli PDO, famous for depth and elegance.
  • Didkure Vineyard: A younger 23-hectare vineyard planted in 2020 on the northern slopes of the Caucasus Mountains, where both local and international grape varieties thrive.

The vineyards follow traditional Kakhetian pruning methods, such as double Guyot or double Cordon. Planting density ranges from 3,400 to 5,000 vines per hectare, with a strict maximum of 9 tons per hectare for standard wines. For premium wines, yields are reduced to 4–5 tons per hectare through green harvesting, resulting in grapes of the highest quality.
