Wine Turán grape

The Turán grape is a Hungarian red wine variety that was developed in 1964 and officially recognized for commercial wine production in 1985. It is an artificial cross, created by combining Bikavér 8 and Gárdonyi Géza. This carefully selected genetics gives the grape its deep purple color, firm structure, and aromatic complexity.

Although it is a relatively young variety, Turán has quickly established itself as an important player in Hungarian wine regions such as Eger and Mátra, where it is used both in blends and in single-variety wines.

Where is the Turán Grape Grown?

The Turán grape is primarily cultivated in Hungary, where it has both historical and commercial significance in red wine production. The largest plantings are found in the Eger and Mátra regions, two of the country’s most renowned wine areas.

The Eger region, famous for the classic Egri Bikavér, provides an ideal environment for Turán thanks to its combination of sunny days, cool nights, and well-draining loam and limestone soils. These conditions allow the grapes to ripen slowly, contributing to intense color, complex aromas, and balanced acidity. The nearby Bükk Mountains also help moderate extreme temperatures, enabling the grape to retain its aromatic freshness.

In the Mátra region, where vineyards are planted on volcanic hills with fertile soils, Turán benefits from a combination of mineral-rich ground and favorable microclimates. This imparts a unique mineral character to the wines and enhances the full, robust flavor of the juice.

While Hungary remains the heart of Turán production, small experimental plantings have also been made abroad, for example in British Columbia, Canada, where the grape is sometimes grown under the name Agria. Although the acreage is still limited, winemakers have shown that Turán can adapt to different climates, provided the soil is well-drained and the vines receive enough sunlight to develop their characteristic color and aromatic profile.

Characteristics of the Turán Grape

Turán is a teinturier grape, meaning that both its skins and juice contain deep color. This makes it particularly suitable for producing wines with intense, ruby-red to almost black hues.
