St. Andrea Winery

Located in the picturesque hills surrounding Eger, one of Hungary’s most renowned wine regions, St. Andrea Winery is celebrated as a symbol of quality, craftsmanship, and terroir expression. Since its founding St. Andrea has grown from a small, ambitious project into an internationally recognized winery, representing the renaissance of traditional Hungarian wines.

History of St. Andrea

The story of St. Andrea begins in 1999, when György Lőrincz, the founder, entered a local wine competition with a wine he named after his wife, Andrea. This first attempt was immediately rewarded with a gold medal, marking the start of a remarkable winemaking journey. In 2002, the winery was officially established, with the planting of vineyards and the construction of a modern wine cellar.

In the following years, St. Andrea significantly expanded its vineyards, acquiring top sites around Eger, including the famous slopes of Nagy-Eged, Hangács, Paptag, Kis-Eged, and Pipis. Today, the estate covers approximately 50 hectares, with a strong focus on quality and terroir expression.

Thanks to his unwavering dedication to craftsmanship, György Lőrincz was named “Winemaker of the Year” in 2009, and in 2025, St. Andrea was awarded “Winery of the Year in Hungary,” a testament to their unparalleled reputation.

Vineyards and Terroir

The vineyards of St. Andrea are situated on various hills surrounding Eger, each with unique soils and microclimates that give the wines their characteristic elegance. The terroir is rich in volcanic rocks, slate, marl, clay, and sandstone, allowing the wines to develop refined minerality, structure, and complexity.
Thanks to the combination of altitude, slope, and soil composition, yields are relatively low, resulting in concentrated and expressive wines. Some vineyards are managed according to organic and biodynamic principles, reflecting St. Andrea’s commitment to sustainability and respect for nature.

Philosophy and Wine Style

St. Andrea aims to produce wines that reflect the unique character of Eger and its soils. The winery combines traditional methods with modern expertise: fermentation in open vats, the use of natural yeasts, and aging in locally sourced Hungarian oak. This results in wines that are elegant, structured, and terroir-driven, without the wood overpowering the fruit.

The focus is on quality over quantity, with each bottle being the result of careful craftsmanship and deep respect for nature and the terroir.

Key Grapes and Wines:

Red Wines

The flagship of St. Andrea is the famous Egri Bikavér (Bull’s Blood), a complex red blend with Blaufränkisch (Kékfrankos) at its core, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, and Shiraz. Top cuvées, such as the Merengő Egri Bikavér Superior and single-vineyard bottlings from Hangács and Nagy-Eged, perfectly showcase the elegance and structure of Eger.

White Wines

For whites, St. Andrea produces Egri Csillag, a blend of indigenous grapes such as Furmint, Hárslevelű, and Olaszrizling, sometimes complemented by international varieties. The Napbor Cuvée is another elegant white blend, rich in flavor and expressive in aroma.

St. Andrea offers wines that are both approachable for enthusiasts and challenging for connoisseurs, with a perfect balance of fruit, acidity, and minerality.

International Recognition

St. Andrea has gained worldwide recognition for its exceptional quality. The wines have been featured in prestigious international rankings, and the winery has played a significant role in the revival of traditional Hungarian wines. Thanks to their dedication, Egri Bikavér has once again become a wine of international stature.
