Carpinus Family Winery
In the world-famous Tokaj wine region of Hungary, there is a modern yet deeply rooted family winery that has quickly gained recognition among wine enthusiasts: Carpinus Family Winery. This relatively young winery combines centuries-old Tokaj traditions with contemporary winemaking techniques and is renowned for its elegant, characterful wines that express the terroir distinctly. Carpinus is especially acclaimed for its dry and sweet Tokaji Furmint wines, where freshness, minerality, and finesse come together in perfect harmony.
Family Business with Vision and Craftsmanship
Carpinus is a true family-run winery, led by siblings István Bai and Edit Bai. Since its founding in 2013, the family has followed a clear philosophy: producing wines that faithfully reflect the character of Tokaj, with respect for nature and the surrounding environment. Annual production ranges between 50,000 and 60,000 bottles, making Carpinus a small-scale quality producer with meticulous attention to detail.
Sustainable viticulture is central to their approach. The vineyards are managed with great care, emphasizing minimal intervention, respect for biodiversity, and a healthy balance between humans and nature. This results in wines that are not only authentic but also convey a clear sense of origin and purity.

Location in Tokaj – UNESCO World Heritage and Unique Terroir
Carpinus Family Winery is located in Bodrogkisfalud, a village in the historic Tokaj-Hegyalja region, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. This area is renowned worldwide for its unique climate and volcanic soils, which together create ideal conditions for grape cultivation.
Carpinus’ vineyards are spread across several famous plots such as Gyertyános, Lapis, Kassi, Veresek, Poklos, Hatalos, Dereszla, Deák, Budaházy, and Kakas. Many of these vineyards are historically classified as first and second-class plots, a key quality guarantee within Tokaj. The south- and southwest-facing slopes ensure optimal sun exposure, while the soils are rich in volcanic rocks such as tuff, andesite, dacite, and loess.
Grape Varieties and Wine Style
The absolute star at Carpinus is the Furmint grape, Tokaj’s iconic variety. The winery also works with Hárslevelű and Sauvignon Blanc, among others. Carpinus wines are characterized by:
- Crisp acidity
- Pronounced minerality
- Elegant fruit notes
- Perfect balance between ripeness and tension
Carpinus produces both dry Tokaji wines as well as late harvest and sweet dessert wines, always emphasizing refinement and terroir expression.

Tokaji Tradition with a Modern Twist
What sets Carpinus apart from many other Tokaj producers is their modern style within a classical region. While Tokaj is globally best known for its sweet Aszú wines, Carpinus demonstrates the tremendous potential of dry Furmint wines. These wines are highly versatile at the table and perfectly align with the contemporary palate of wine enthusiasts and sommeliers.
At the same time, the rich Tokaj tradition remains evident in their sweet wines, where noble rot (botrytis) creates intense aromas of apricot, honey, peach, and spices, always balanced by refreshing acidity.
