Casreli Winery

The story of Casreli begins in Tbilisi, where five friends met while studying medicine. Inspired by their shared dream, they decided to take a step beyond their medical careers and start their own wine project. In 2014, they purchased land in the village of Vachnadziani, in the Alazani Valley, one of Georgia’s most renowned wine regions. By 2015, the first grapevines were planted, laying the foundation for their wine production.

The main goal of Casreli Winery is clear and ambitious: to create high-quality, natural wines that reflect the character of the land and the unique grape varieties. Each wine is carefully produced following traditional Georgian methods, including fermentation and aging in qvevri, large clay vessels buried in the ground. Special attention is given to the specific characteristics of the soil, the vineyard’s microclimate, and the natural growth rhythm of the grapes. This approach results in wines that are not only pure and authentic but also express the terroir and cultural richness of Georgia in every bottle.

Casreli’s project is therefore more than just winemaking; it is a living testament to passion, friendship, and craftsmanship, where modern knowledge and tradition work hand in hand to create wines that are recognized and appreciated worldwide.

Vineyards and Grape Varieties

Casreli has vineyards in both Kakheti and Imereti, totaling 8.5 hectares of organic vineyards. The vineyards in Kakheti are located at various altitudes (400, 450, and 650 meters above sea level), which contributes to the complexity of the wines. In Imereti, a region with a slightly subtropical climate, there is a smaller 2-hectare vineyard situated on a northern slope.

The winery focuses on ancient Georgian grape varieties, including:

Kakheti: Chitistvala Tetri, Mtsvivani Kakhuri, Dzaganidzis Shavi, Kisi, Khikhvi, Rkatsiteli, Budeshuri Tetri, Mtsvane Kakhuri, Rkatsiteli Muskaturi, Chinuri, Saperavi, Aleksandrouli, Mujuretuli

Imereti: Jani, Sakmiela, Krakhuna, Chkhaveri

Some of these grape varieties are rare or nearly forgotten, such as Tetri Chitistvala and Mtsvivani Kakhuri, giving Casreli a unique place in the world of natural wines.

Traditional Georgian Winemaking

Casreli Winery uses traditional Georgian winemaking techniques: all wines are fermented and aged in qvevri, large clay vessels buried underground. This process gives the wines their characteristic complexity, deep aromas, and unique texture. The wines are bottled unfiltered and without additives, preserving the true terroir and pure expression of the grapes.

The winery produces both red and orange wines, internationally recognized for their elegant structure and natural flavor.

International Recognition

Since its first harvest, Casreli has quickly gained a reputation. In 2016, the winery won gold and silver at the International Qvevri Wine Competition, a prestigious competition for traditional Georgian wines. Since then, Casreli has exported its wines to countries such as the United States, the Netherlands, Japan, Poland, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, China, and Thailand.

A notable milestone was the recognition of their Chitistvala grape wine by the British wine magazine Decanter, which named it one of the best orange wines in the world.
