Which wine goes with asparagus?

To answer the question right away: white wine with asparagus is the best combination. Red and possibly also rosé can in principle be drunk as wine with asparagus, but can somewhat disturb the taste. This is because asparagus itself has a fairly characteristic taste. A red wine can soon drown this out. Of course there are different types of white wine that go well with asparagus, but usually a dry white wine with a slightly soft aftertaste is the most suitable.

Combining wines and asparagus

We also follow a number of rules of thumb for the best combination of wine with asparagus. Did you know, for example, that when you eat green asparagus, you can combine it with red wine, for example. This has to do with the amount of tannin in the wine. In addition, it is important how the wine is structured. These are some other of our tips:

  • Tannin and (white) asparagus do not mix well. Red wine contains a lot of tannin that provides acidity, but also a light-tasting flavor. Red wine with asparagus does not mix and produces a faint taste.
  • A heavy (red) wine with asparagus is out of the question. A solid red wine, for example from grapes such as the Pinot or Syrah, drowns out the asparagus. Wines with wood bearing can also spoil the taste. So pay attention to this!
  • Too light wine with asparagus is also not good. The characteristic taste of asparagus can thus drown out the wine. And that’s a shame, since you want to enjoy both the asparagus and the wine.
