Château Musar

Château Musar is not just a winery; it is a living legend of Lebanese wine culture. Located in the enchanting Bekaa Valley, this family estate has built a reputation since 1930 as a producer of wines with character, complexity, and timeless elegance. Château Musar is recognized worldwide for its unique red, white, and rosé wines, each reflecting Lebanon’s rich history and exceptional terroir.

The History of Château Musar

Château Musar was founded by Gaston Hochar in 1930, inspired by the centuries-old wine traditions of his country and the Bordeaux methods he encountered during his travels. Gaston’s vision was carried forward by his son, Serge Hochar, who took over as winemaker in 1959. Having studied in Bordeaux under renowned oenologists, Serge combined his knowledge and intuitive style with the traditional methods of the Middle East.

During the turbulent years of the Lebanese Civil War (1975–1990), Château Musar continued producing wine undaunted. Serge aptly called this period the “wines of the war,” as grapes were harvested despite dangerous conditions. Thanks to this unwavering dedication, Musar gained international recognition, notably after presenting the 1967 vintage at the Bristol Wine Fair in 1979, which attracted global attention.

Today, the winery is managed by the third generation of the Hochar family, with Gaston Jr. overseeing daily operations and Marc Hochar responsible for international distribution. Château Musar remains true to its philosophy: crafting wines with respect for nature, terroir, and tradition.

Vineyards and Terroir: The Heart of Musar

The vineyards of Château Musar are primarily located in the Bekaa Valley, at an altitude of around 1,000 meters. Surrounded by Lebanon’s majestic mountains, the region enjoys a unique microclimate with warm days and cool nights—ideal for preserving the aromas and acidity in the grapes. The soil is rich in limestone and gravel, contributing to the wines’ minerality and complexity.

In addition to the Bekaa Valley, Château Musar also has vineyards in the Byblos region, along the Mediterranean coast, where new grape varieties are cultivated at about 400 meters above sea level. The winery is committed to organic and sustainable vineyard practices, with minimal intervention, natural fermentation, and respect for biodiversity.

The Wines of Château Musar

Red Wines

The renowned Château Musar Rouge is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, and Cinsault, fermented with natural yeasts and minimal use of sulfites. The wine matures in French oak barrels and develops over years in the bottle, resulting in a complex wine with deep aromas of red fruit, spices, earth, and tobacco. Each vintage has its own character, making Musar wines highly prized by collectors and wine enthusiasts worldwide.

White Wines

Château Musar’s white wines are unique in the world. Made from the indigenous Lebanese grapes Obaideh and Merwah, they combine rich aromatic complexity with a refined structure. Notes of citrus, honey, peach, and delicate spices make these wines both elegant and distinctive, with excellent aging potential.

Rosé and Musar Jeune

For those seeking a more approachable, fresh style, Musar Jeune offers a younger interpretation of the classic wines. Available in red, white, and rosé, these wines are fruity, lively, and ready to enjoy immediately, without compromising on the quality and heritage of Château Musar.
