Wine Kisi grape
The Kisi grape is one of the most fascinating indigenous white grape varieties of Georgia. Originating from the ancient wine region of Kakheti, this grape embodies tradition, elegance, and authenticity. For a long time, however, the variety fell into obscurity, particularly during the Soviet period, when the focus was on large-scale production and other varieties were favored.
At the end of the twentieth century, Kisi was rediscovered by winemakers in search of authenticity and quality. Since then, appreciation for this grape has grown steadily, and it is once again regarded as one of Georgia’s most expressive white grape varieties.
Vineyard and Character
The Kisi grape thrives best on the sunny, well-drained slopes of Kakheti. It is a mid- to late-ripening variety known for its low yields, which contribute to concentration and aromatic intensity in the wine.
Although Kisi is relatively resistant to frost and drought, it requires careful vineyard management due to its susceptibility to certain fungal diseases. It is precisely this combination of resilience and fragility that makes it beloved by artisanal winemakers who prioritize quality over quantity.

Wine Styles: From Fresh to Deeply Complex
One of the greatest strengths of the Kisi grape is its versatility. Depending on the vinification method, it can produce a wide range of wine styles.
Classic White Kisi Wine
In modern winemaking, often using stainless steel tanks, Kisi produces elegant white wines with a pale straw-yellow color. The aromatic profile is refined and fresh, featuring notes of blossom, citrus, pear, and green apple, supported by lively acidity.
Traditional Qvevri Wine (Amber Wine)
When Kisi is fermented and aged in qvevri — the buried clay vessels that are so characteristic of Georgia — a completely different expression emerges. These amber-colored wines are richer and more complex, with aromas of dried apricot, mango, nuts, and spicy nuances. Skin contact adds structure and a subtle tannic character.
Kisi wines stand out for their balance and refinement. In the classic style, they are fresh and aromatic, while qvevri wines offer depth and texture. In both cases, the wines remain elegant, with a natural harmony between fruit, acidity, and structure. Many connoisseurs regard Kisi as a grape with a distinct personality that purely reflects the terroir of Kakheti.
Food Pairings
Kisi wines pair beautifully with a wide variety of dishes.
- Classic white wines: grilled fish, chicken, vegetable dishes, or mild cheeses
- Amber wines: creamy sauces, nuts, spicy dishes, and aged cheeses
Thanks to their aromatic intensity and fresh structure, Kisi wines also pair exceptionally well with light Mediterranean cuisine and Asian dishes.
