Douloufakis Winery
Located in the picturesque wine region of Dafnes, in the Heraklion area of Crete, Douloufakis Winery is a family-owned business with a rich history spanning three generations and nearly a century of winemaking experience. The winery is renowned for its combination of traditional Cretan winemaking and modern techniques, with a strong focus on quality, terroir, and sustainable viticulture.
History of the Winery
The history of Douloufakis begins in 1930, when grandfather Dimitris Douloufakis founded the family business and introduced professional winemaking in traditional wine cellars. In 1960, his son George Douloufakis took over and continued the tradition.
The third generation is represented by Nikos Douloufakis, who in 1993, after completing his studies in Oenology in Italy, took over the family business. He introduced innovative vineyard techniques and modern production methods, allowing the winery to further develop while preserving its authentic Cretan identity.

Vineyards of Douloufakis
Douloufakis’ private vineyards cover 20 hectares in the heart of Dafnes. Situated on hills at an altitude of 350–450 meters, the vineyards benefit from limestone-rich soils and a microclimate that is ideal for growing high-quality grapes. This unique terroir contributes to the refined flavor and complexity of the wines.
In addition to its own vineyards, Douloufakis collaborates with local partner vineyards, maintaining close supervision to ensure the highest quality grapes.
Grape Varieties and Wine Types
Douloufakis combines native Cretan grape varieties with selected international varieties. Their portfolio includes, among others:
Native varieties: Liatiko, Vidiano, Vilana, Kotsifali, Mandilari, Muscat White (Spina), Assyrtiko, Malvasia di Candia Aromatica
International varieties: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Sangiovese
The winery is particularly known for the rediscovery and development of Vidiano, a nearly extinct indigenous grape variety that has now become a symbol of the winery.
Production and Innovation
Since 1996, the winery has been modernized with state-of-the-art equipment, including stainless steel tanks, pumps, and grape presses, enhancing both efficiency and quality. The winery produces red, white, and rosé wines, with a strong emphasis on single-varietal wines that highlight the unique characteristics of each grape variety.
In 2001, the winery took its first steps toward organic viticulture, and by 2006, five wine labels were officially certified as organic.
Mission and Vision
Douloufakis strives for perfection in every aspect of winemaking: from vineyard management to vinification and bottling. By combining tradition with innovation, they create wines that reflect Crete’s rich history while meeting modern taste preferences worldwide. The fourth generation is ready to continue this tradition, with an ongoing focus on sustainability, quality, and creativity.
