Adega de Cantanhede Winery

Founded in 1954, Adega de Cantanhede is known as one of Portugal’s most renowned wineries. Located in the heart of the Bairrada wine region, in the city of Cantanhede, the winery combines tradition, craftsmanship, and modern technology to produce wines of exceptional quality.

With approximately 500 active grape growers and an annual harvest of 6 to 8 million kilos of grapes, Adega de Cantanhede is the largest producer in the region, accounting for around 40% of Bairrada’s total wine production. About 80% of its production carries the prestigious Bairrada DOC and Beira Atlântico IGP certifications. Thanks to this focus on quality, the winery has been a market leader in Portugal for DOC and IGP wines, as well as sparkling wines, for many years.

Unique Terroir

The location of Adega de Cantanhede in Bairrada is crucial to the quality of its wines. The region is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, the Mondego River, the Vouga River, and the Buçaco and Caramulo mountains, and enjoys a Mediterranean-Atlantic climate with mild temperatures and regular rainfall (900–1,100 mm per year).

The clay-limestone soils and flat landscapes provide ideal conditions for cultivating both red and white grapes, while the proximity to the sea contributes a unique freshness and balanced acidity to the grapes. This terroir is particularly well-suited for producing high-quality sparkling wines, for which Bairrada is internationally renowned.

Wines of Outstanding Quality

Adega de Cantanhede is known for its broad and diverse wine portfolio, including:

Red wines from Baga, Touriga Nacional, and Aragonez

White wines from Bical, Maria-Gomes, and Arinto

Rosé wines

Sparkling wines made using the traditional method

The winery combines traditional Bairrada grape varieties with modern vinification techniques, resulting in wines that are rich in aromas, elegant in taste, and complex in structure. The Baga grape, the region’s flagship variety, is particularly famous for producing powerful, long-lasting red wines, often compared to Italy’s renowned Nebbiolo.

International Recognition and Awards

The quality of Adega de Cantanhede’s wines has been recognized internationally. The winery has won over 750 awards in prestigious competitions.

In 2015, the winery was included in the Top 100 Wineries of the World by the World Association of Writers and Journalists of Wine and Spirits. Additionally, it has been named Best Wine Cooperative of Portugal three times by leading wine magazines.
