Well-known wine varieties from Georgia

In all those thousands of years of winegrowing, countless red wines from Georgia are of course known. Over the years, various blue grapes have been used as vines. Still, there are a number of red wines that predominate in the wine country. The most famous and popular blue grape varieties:

  • Saperavi: Wines from the Saperavi grape are also known as the pride of Georgia. The dark red Saperavi wines have a robust, somewhat heavy but balanced taste. The grape produces wines with a lot of body and a relatively high alcohol percentage.
  • Aleksandrouli: red wine from Aleksandrouli is characterized by the fruity notes of blackberries, raspberries and cherries. Aleksandrouli wines are available in dry and semi-sweet varieties.

About wine and pitchers

Unique to Georgian wines is the use of the “Kvevri” or “Qvevri” in the production of red wines. The Kvevri is a large, round earthenware jug in which the wine is made and stored. Even in the 21st century, the Kvevri are still used because of the unique taste that this authentic method gives to the wine. So if you see the word Qvevri on a bottle of Georgian wine, it is almost red wine that has been preserved and made in these Georgian jugs. Among other things, the Saperavi is regularly seen as a Qvevri wine variety.
