Buy wine from the Shiraz or Syrah grape

The Shiraz or Syrah grapes are originally from the Middle East and were already introduced in Western Europe during the Middle Ages. However, the exact origin of the grape still remains a mystery to wine connoisseurs and vinologists. However, the Shiraz or Syrah grape quickly became popular in Europe. The Syrah found its way to the southern French wine regions in the Rhone, while the Syrah grape found its way to the “New World”. Shiraz grapes are therefore grown in South America, but mainly Australia.

The differences between the Shiraz or Syrah

And now you are of course curious about the difference between the Shiraz or Syrah grapes. Although it is basically the same type, there are clear differences between the two grapes. As with many wines, the taste of the wine is decisive. Where a Shiraz often gives a bit sweeter tones to a red wine (including black currants or plums), a Syrah grape is often tighter, with a recognizable touch of tobacco or pepper. This minimal difference seems small, but if you taste wine from both grape varieties separately, the differences become clearly recognizable.

A unique taste

Red syrah or shiraz wine are both characterized by a very robust taste. The trained wine drinker clearly recognizes the amount of tannin in the wine, this is because the grapes have a thick skin. The wine therefore has real body. That makes a good syrah or shiraz excellent to combine with heavier dishes such as (game) meat, but also stews and even cheese boards. The wine usually has a high alcohol content, so we advise against drinking it with light dishes such as poultry or salads.

Our tip: combine a nice syrah or shiraz wine with lamb.

Versatility

Another part of the label to look out for when buying a Shiraz or Syrah wine is the type of wine. A syrah or shiraz can be sold in a cépage (wine from one grape variety) and as a bled (also called assembly). In the case of a blend, the Syrah or Shiraz is combined with other, often lighter grape varieties. The Syrah grape is, especially with Australian wines, mainly combined with a Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grape. This produces a wine that is also known as the CSMS blend. The GSM blend, a combination of the Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, is also quite popular.
