Buy red wine
Red wine is made by using only grapes from blue grape varieties. However, exactly how red a wine becomes, depends on the type of grape used. After thousands of years of cultivation, breeding and the influences of nature, there is a wide range of blue grape varieties. In addition to the well-known French grape varieties for red wine, such as Merlot or Pinot Noir, grape varieties have been cultivated all over the world. These varieties are characterized by the specific region, the soil and the climate in which they are grown. And let’s say the Caucasus is an excellent area for wine growing!
Our red wines
Especially from the Armenian and Georgian plateaus and mountains, a very wide range of red wines has been available over the years. What started as private cultivation by winegrowers has now grown into a professional wine culture: the red wines from Georgia and Armenia are now not inferior to their French or Spanish counterparts! Some famous grapes:
- Areni noir: best-known red grape variety from Armenia. Also called the Pinot Noir or Merlot of the Caucasus and is known for its full and hearty taste. Excellent grape in combination with game or other meat dishes.
- Kakhet and Kindoghni: Both beautiful, full-bodied grape varieties with a good bouquet and matching tannins are also used for sweet dessert wines at a later harvest.
- Haghtanak (or Akhtanak): grape variety that can be ideally combined. The Hagtanak is used as a supporting grape variety in cépages from several grape varieties.
Choosing the right wine
Now that you know a little more about some grape varieties, it is time to choose the right wine. But How do you actually choose this one? First of all, it is wise to choose the reason for the wine: do you drink the wine on special occasions or a dinner? Check out what the dishes are and try to match them. Remember that red wines go better with meat dishes and game than with poultry or fish. Never “just” choose a wine, but always be guided by your personal preferences, taste or expert advice.
