Greek white wine is back. Where in the past mainly strange bottles came from the country, nowadays we are more and more pleasantly surprised by top quality wines. New winemakers are at the helm and thought it was high time to put Greece back on the map. Because Greece is not unfamiliar with the making of white wine. Greeks have been real winemakers since ancient times. Unfortunately, their knowledge of vineyard management was largely lost when the Ottomans came to power. In the 20th century, Greece started producing wine again, and therefore white wine.
This was not without a struggle, because at the time there were no real laws and regulations for wine production, which allowed producers to do their thing, which did not benefit the quality of the Greek white wine. But those times are over. Appropriate rules for viticulture have been established since accession to the EU, but it is mainly the Greeks themselves who are setting increasingly higher standards for their wines. And this can be tasted!
Native grape varieties
Producers still like to use indigenous grape varieties to produce quality Greek white wines. For white wines they choose Vilana, Vidiano, Assyrtiko, Roditis and of course much more. Especially the Vidiano grape is special, because a wine made from this grape is rare. At least this was true. The Douloufakis winery has given new love to this grape variety and now makes excellent white wines from it. In addition to native grape varieties, international grape varieties are also planted. In some of our Greek white wines, the indigenous grape varieties are blended with international varieties for an optimal and unique taste experience.

Greece has a perfect climate for producing white wine. Winters are short and summers long and warm. Moreover, Greece is mountainous and is largely surrounded by the sea. The soil of the vineyards is full of minerals, so that the vines thrive and can grow fully.
