Which wine to drink with the barbecue?
Let’s start with the basics of choosing a wine to go with the barbecue. That basis consists of what you put on the barbecue and what you yourself feel like doing. The following also applies: red wines and / or rosé go better with (red) meat and chicken, while white wine combines better with a piece of chicken, fish or a salad. Rosé and white wine in particular are popular as a wine for the barbecue. That’s because these wines need to be refrigerated. And that is of course wonderfully refreshing on a hot summer day.
Tips wine with the barbecue
So there are several tips we can give you if you want to drink wine with your barbecue. But it is important that you stay close to your own taste. Are you not such a fan of red wine after all? Then you certainly don’t have to drink it at a barbecue. A number of points to keep in mind:
- Salads and (grilled) vegetables. White wine is ideal for lighter salads and vegetable dishes. Choose a wine that is wonderfully refreshing. Both dry and sweet white wine are suitable. Do you like a little extra? Then a white wine with bubbles is also sufficient.
- Chicken on the barbecue is most often eaten as a satay. Chicken combines well with a fine rosé, but a full-bodied white or fruity red wine also goes well with barbecue chicken. Red wine is also possible. For example with marinated chicken. But this wine should not be too heavy.
- Whether you put a steak on the grill or fry a marinated bacon, red wine always goes with meat. Choose a smooth, fruity variant with pork. In the case of beef it may be a slightly heavier wine. But not too heavy. Because a lot of meat is marinated and we often add a sauce to the meat, a heavy red wine can be a bit too drunken.
