Telavi Marani Saperavi 2021

Telavi Marani Saperavi is an impressive red wine from the heart of Georgia, originating from the renowned wine region of Kakheti in the eastern part of the country. This area has been known for its excellent winemaking for centuries, thanks in part to the favorable continental climate. The warm summers and cool nights create ideal conditions for grapes to ripen with distinctive character. This wine is made exclusively from the indigenous Saperavi grape – a variety that symbolizes Georgian winemaking tradition. The grapes are known for their deep color and pronounced flavor, resulting in a wine with depth, elegance, and structure. Only perfectly ripe grapes are harvested by hand, ensuring quality from start to finish. After harvest, the grapes are carefully processed. They are gently destemmed and pressed, after which fermentation takes place in modern stainless steel tanks. The temperature is strictly controlled between 23 and 28 degrees Celsius to preserve the wine’s aromatic and flavor profile. During fermentation, techniques such as pumping over and gentle stirring of the skins are used to achieve maximum extraction of color and flavor.

Fermentation is followed by a short skin maceration of about 8 to 10 days, after which the young wine is racked and clarified. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation, which gives it a softer mouthfeel and better balance. Although most of the wine is aged in stainless steel tanks, a small portion is transferred to French oak barrels, where it rests for several months to develop additional layers of aroma and refinement. The result is a powerful, full-bodied wine with an alcohol content of 13.5%.

Taste character Telavi Marani Saperavi

The Telavi Marani Saperavi immediately stands out with its deep ruby-red color tinged with purple – a sign of strength and character. On the nose, it reveals an expressive bouquet of ripe berries and juicy cherries, offering a seductive, fruit-driven first impression. On the palate, this vibrant fruit profile persists, accompanied by subtle spices that add an intriguing complexity. The wine’s structure is harmonious, with a well-balanced interplay between acidity and tannins. The finish is long-lasting, leaving a spicy impression that invites the next sip. Thanks to its rich flavor profile, this Saperavi pairs particularly well with hearty meals. Think roasted meats – such as entrecôte or lamb chops – or savory dishes based on tomato sauce. Cheeses with a pronounced flavor, such as aged goat cheese or mature cheddar, also make an excellent match. For optimal enjoyment, it is recommended to serve this wine slightly chilled, around 16 to 18 degrees Celsius.

Description

Winery

In 1915, Telavi Marani came into existence, but the young winery soon faced turbulent times. Just two years after its founding, the Russian Revolution brought about a dramatic turn of events: the company was nationalized. It wasn’t until the end of the twentieth century that it returned to private ownership, marking the beginning of a new era in the history of this Georgian wine producer.

Today, Telavi Marani works closely with French experts in viticulture and oenology. They play a key role in every aspect of the production process — from the selection of grape varieties and vine grafting to the aging and bottling of the wine. Every detail is handled with the utmost care. While modern techniques are applied, the core philosophy remains rooted in centuries-old Georgian traditions. Indigenous grape varieties and a deep respect for the local terroir are central to their approach.

Telavi Marani wines enjoy international recognition and can be found in Russia, Europe, New Zealand, and the United States, among other places. They have been awarded numerous gold and silver medals at prestigious wine competitions around the world — a clear testament to their quality and craftsmanship. With their contemporary appearance and refined character, the wines appeal to both the local market and international audiences.
