Orgo Rkatsiteli 2018

Orgo Rkatsiteli is an intriguing amber-colored wine from Georgia, originating in the historic wine region of Kakheti, more specifically from the area around Tsinandali. This wine is made from the Rkatsiteli grape, an ancient variety considered one of the oldest cultivated grape types in the world. Archaeological findings show that this grape was already being grown in southern Georgia around 8,000 years ago. What makes this wine particularly special is the traditional Georgian winemaking method that uses Qvevri — large clay amphorae buried in the ground. This technique keeps the temperature stable and cool during fermentation, which is essential for developing the wine’s distinctive structure and depth. The whole grape, including skins and stems, is fermented, resulting in a deep amber color and a robust tannin structure. After fermentation, the wine continues to mature in the same Qvevri vessels. This extended aging process enhances the complexity of the flavors and provides a silky smooth finish to the tannins.

Orgo Rkatsiteli is a wine with aging potential; it continues to evolve in the bottle, becoming richer and more nuanced over time. With an alcohol content of 13%, this wine offers a perfect balance of strength and finesse. It is a beautiful expression of Georgian wine culture—deeply rooted in tradition, yet strikingly modern in character. Let yourself be surprised by the unique flavors of this authentic amber wine.

Taste character Orgo Rkatsiteli

When poured, the vibrant amber hue of the Orgo Rkatsiteli immediately stands out – a color that sparks curiosity and invites tasting. This Georgian wine surprises with a layered bouquet of aromas: think of a blend of aromatic herbs, ripe stone fruits, and a soft hint of beeswax. On the palate, it is rich and well-balanced, with a velvety texture and structured tannins that still offer room for aging. The Orgo Rkatsiteli reveals itself as a characterful wine, perfect for connoisseurs who appreciate complexity and depth. Its bold flavor profile makes it a rewarding companion at the table. It pairs particularly well with dishes featuring pronounced flavors, such as spiced grilled meats or barbecued dishes with smoky or spicy notes. Surprisingly, this amber wine also forms an elegant match with sushi. When combined with umami-rich elements like soy sauce and fresh fish, its full flavor truly shines – a pairing that is increasingly gaining popularity outside of Japan as well.

For the best experience, serve this wine slightly chilled, between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, its aromatic richness fully unfolds, showing the wine at its most expressive. Orgo Rkatsiteli is a wine that continues to intrigue, both now and after several years of bottle aging.

Description

Producer

Gogi Dakishvili is widely recognized as a born winemaker and plays a key role in the contemporary Georgian wine scene. As an expert, he oversees production at the renowned Schuchmann Winery, where he is responsible for a range of refined, modern wines. At the same time, he passionately runs his own winery, where he is dedicated to the artisanal process of winemaking in traditional qvevri — large clay vessels buried underground for fermentation and aging.

His winery is located in Telavi, the beating heart of Kakheti, the warmest and most well-known wine region of Georgia. The vineyards are spread across both sides of the vast Alazani Valley, which stretches eastward toward Azerbaijan and eventually reaches the Caspian Sea. To the north, the majestic peaks of the Greater Caucasus Mountains tower over the landscape. This mountain range not only protects the region from extreme weather conditions but also provides a steady supply of meltwater and spring water throughout the year, which is essential for viticulture.
