Description
Winery
The history of Makashvili Wine Cellar dates back to the 15th century when a Georgian princely family named Makashvili established their own winery. The delicious wines of Makashvili were even served at royal courts during that time. Unfortunately, after multiple wars, the winery gradually fell into disrepair. But let’s fast forward to the year 2012 when the Makashvili marani (wine cellar) was rediscovered and fully restored. Today, this winery is known for its dedication to preserving centuries-old Georgian winemaking traditions and crafting exquisite qvevri wines made in ancient amphorae.
The winemaking technology of the winery is based on both traditional Kakhetian winemaking and historical expertise adapted to modern developments. It’s hard to imagine traditional Georgian winemaking without a qvevri. The ancient method of fermenting wine in qvevri, which is approximately 8,000 years old, is one of the cultural treasures of the country and its hallmark. The company has its own wine cellar, and its history begins at the Makashvili estate from the latter half of the 15th century. Vaziani is the heir and successor of the special qvevri winemaking technique of Makashvili.
