What is the best way to store a wine?

Anyone who wants to enjoy wine ensures that the wine is stored as optimally as possible. This differs per type of wine, so it certainly doesn’t hurt to delve into this. How you best store a wine depends a lot on the type, bottle, location and closure of the bottle. We would like to tell you more about it in this blog. Because a good storage place ensures that you enjoy your wine optimally.

The right place

Wine can be kept for a while, especially if you want to stock up. Or buy a few bottles for a dinner or festive occasion. The most important thing is that you never look up extremes for a correct storage temperature. Never keep the wine in (too) hot or cold places. Preferably, keep bottles out of the sunlight in a cool, slightly dark place. True wine lovers probably have a special wine cabinet or even a climate cabinet for this. Wine is continuously stored in the perfect way in the climate cabinet. Not too hot, but not too cold either. Wine bottles may be put down, although it is better to keep bottles with a screw or rubber cap upright. This way you avoid a rubber flavor or oxidation in the wine.

Correct temperature to store wine

In general, red wine is best when it is stored at a temperature between 14 and 18 degrees Celsius. This is approximately room temperature in the Netherlands. White wine and rosé can be stored a little cooler: between 7 and 12 degrees Celsius. But this differs per wine type. If the wine is not kept at the right temperature, this can affect the taste of the wine to such an extent that it is not pleasant to drink or even becomes a bit sour.

Tip: The ideal storage or drinking temperature is often indicated on the bottle. The seller can also provide you with more information about this.

How do I store opened wine?

Do you know that? Delicious a glass of wine with dinner or during a drink, but the bottle ends half empty. What do you do with this opened wine? Fortunately, you can keep it in different ways. Most wines have a revolving village, so you can just spin them back on the bottle. White wine and rosé can be put back in the fridge and red wine back in the (wine) cabinet. A half-filled bottle will keep for another two to three days. Provided that it is properly closed with its own cork.

Longer expiration date

Do you want to keep wine longer? Then choose a special (vacuum) wine stopper. In that case, wine can last even a week. Much depends on the amount of wine left in the bottle. This determines whether or not oxidation by oxygen occurs and “affects” the wine. Do you still have a small bottom in the bottle? Then it is actually better to drink that immediately.
