Wine House
Voskevaz Winery is the oldest winery in Armenia, originally established in 1932 during the Soviet era. It underwent a remarkable transformation in 2004 when it was privatized and fully modernized. Situated in the enchanting village of Voskevaz, just a stone’s throw away from the capital, Yerevan, this winery symbolizes Armenia’s rich wine traditions.
The dynamic story of Voskevaz Winery reaches its zenith under the leadership of a young Russian winemaker infused with experience from Spain. His vision and passion led to a renewed focus on modern wines, with a special emphasis on indigenous Armenian grape varieties. In line with the emerging trend in neighboring Georgia, Voskevaz recently introduced the production of ‘orange wines.’ These wines are crafted in ‘Karas,’ large clay pots carefully buried in the cellars of the winery.
During the communist era, Voskevaz was primarily known for its fortified wines and sherry. However, with privatization in 2004 under the guidance of Armenian investor David Hovkannisyan, the winery underwent a metamorphosis. The cellar was equipped with state-of-the-art Italian machinery, and an experienced Italian winemaker was brought on board to bring the vision of quality wines to life. Voskevaz emphasizes the use of indigenous Armenian grape varieties, including the distinctive Areni Noir, Kangun, and Muscat Vardabuyr. The grapes are carefully selected from local growers in the vicinity and transported to Voskevaz at night to preserve their freshness. With approximately 60 hectares of vineyards located about a kilometer above sea level, the winery benefits from optimal conditions with warm days and cool nights.
