Wine House
Márkvárt Winery was founded in 1996 by Jani Márkvárt and his grandfather. For generations, the family has been rooted in the Szekszárd region in Southern Hungary, though their origins trace back to Southern Germany. With passion and dedication, the family began producing local wines, reviving old vines of the native Kadarka grape. These beautiful vineyards, still cherished and cultivated, serve as the inspiration for their logo and several labels. They own various vineyards in the Baranya Valley, Faluhely, Sauli Valley, Jobb Remete, Bakta, and Gyűszű Valley. Their greatest pride lies in two vineyards planted with the Kadarka grape, one dating back to 1935 and the other possibly even older. The exact age remains a mystery due to a lack of documentation. However, the richness of their old roots and the love with which they care for them contribute to the outstanding quality of their wines.
Jani Márkvárt taught himself the art of winemaking, aiming to let the fruity character of the wines dominate. While they experimented with using (oak) barrels in the past, they stopped acquiring new barrels since 2009. The focus now lies on preserving the pure essence of the wines. Only a few wines are lightly aged in old barrels to impart a subtle hint of oak aging. At Márkvárt Winery, they strive to produce wines that perfectly represent the Szekszárd region. The local Kadarka and Kékfrankos grapes play an essential role, along with the beloved blend known as Bikavér (Bull’s Blood). While the winery primarily works with indigenous grape varieties, their assortment also includes classic grape varieties such as Zweigelt, Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
