Macedonian Wine

Macedonia, a country with many minerals, rivers, mountains and delicious wines. It may not be the first country that comes to mind when you think of wine, but Macedonia has unique wines. The moderate continental climate, the Mediterranean influences and the passion for the profession make the Macedonian wine culture very special. In the last century, Macedonia lagged far behind in terms of wine production. The methods were outdated and the required knowledge was not always knowledge. In recent years, considerable investments have been made in wine production in Macedonia. As a result, the production technology has been greatly improved. Wine culture is no longer a neglected child, but a leading industry. Due to the considerable development, Macedonian wine in general is gaining more and more popularity. At Drinkrituals.nl we now also have a nice range consisting of different, unique Macedonian wines.

The climate in Macedonia is perfect for the ripening of different grape varieties. In general, summers are warm. During the day there is a good temperature and at night it cools down to about 10/15 degrees Celsius. Autumn is very long and this gives the grapes plenty of time to fully go through the ripening process. As a result, there are tasty grapes that make Macedonian wines unique. In Macedonia there are more than 20000 hectares of vineyards. In these vineyards, mainly indigenous grape varieties are grown.

The native grape varieties

In Macedonia, a large number of different grape varieties are used to make the wine. Many of these grapes belong to the indigenous grape varieties. They all have their own unique flavor elements. We would like to highlight a number of grapes:

  • Vranec: The Vranec is a very intense, dark grape that is associated with strength, success and strength. The wine made from the Vranec is often also known as ‘black wine’. This grape is characteristic of the people from the area; strong and warm-blooded. The wine owes its dark color to the large presence of dyes in the grape. A very special grape!
  • Kratosija: The Kratosija grape also has a rich history. This grape has been grown on Macedonian territory since ancient times. It was briefly threatened with extinction due to its popularity, but luckily Kratosija survived. The Macedonian winemakers know what to do with this dark grape. Many wines are based on the Kratosija and that is fascinating. Definitely worth a taste.
  • Temjanika: Do you enjoy (semi) dry white wines? Then the Temjanika grape is a perfect basis for your wines. It is a somewhat mysterious grape with a beautiful history. Originally, the history of the Temjanika lies in the Middle East, but the Macedonian winemakers quickly appreciate this grape variety. The unique thing about the Macedonian Temjanika are the additional aromas. Fruity scents, basil and incense alternate. A must-have for the enthusiast.
