Kumesen Shuzo, founded in 1952, is a leading Japanese distillery from Okinawa originally known for producing Awamori, a traditional distilled spirit made from Indica rice, unique to the Ryukyu Islands. In 1989, Kumesen took a groundbreaking step by aging Awamori in oak barrels, which led to the development of an entirely new whisky category: Ryukyu Whisky. This innovative style is distinguished by the use of rice instead of barley or corn, resulting in a smooth, complex flavor with tropical influences.
