In the heart of Armenia, under the majestic presence of Mount Ararat, Karas Wines is spearheading a winemaking revolution. The name “Karas,” which means “amphora” in Armenian, pays homage to the ancient clay vessels that have been essential in winemaking for over 6000 years. This profound connection to Armenia’s storied wine tradition drives Karas Wines to reshape the future of wine from one of the oldest wine regions in the world, with the goal of producing some of the most coveted wines globally.
Though Armenia boasts an ancient winemaking heritage, it had not fully embraced contemporary production techniques until Karas Wines emerged. The company’s transformative journey began with the hiring of a distinguished Argentine winemaker from Mendoza, entrusted with modernizing their production methods. They also enlisted Michel Roland, a celebrated international wine consultant, to oversee their innovations. This blend of expertise and creativity marked the dawn of a new era in Armenian winemaking.
Established in 2003, Karas Wines chose prime vineyard locations near Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, at the base of the breathtaking Mount Ararat. The vineyards thrive on the region’s rich black volcanic soils and altitudes ranging from 400 to 1100 meters, creating ideal conditions for growing high-quality grapes. Committed to excellence, Karas Wines aims to produce wines that honor Armenia’s rich vinous history while catering to modern tastes. The combination of abundant sunshine and volcanic soil imparts a unique character to their grapes, reflecting the distinct Armenian terroir in every bottle.
