Nestled in the heart of Armenia, beneath the imposing silhouette of Mount Ararat, Karas Wines is leading a revolution in winemaking. The name “Karas” translates to “amphora” in Armenian—a nod to the ancient clay vessels used for winemaking for over 6,000 years. This deep connection to Armenia’s historic wine culture fuels Karas Wines’ ambition to shape the future of wine from one of the world’s oldest wine regions, aiming to produce some of the most sought-after wines globally.
Despite Armenia’s ancient winemaking heritage, the country had not fully embraced modern wine production techniques—until Karas Wines entered the scene. The company’s transformative journey began with the recruitment of a seasoned Argentine winemaker from Mendoza, tasked with revolutionizing their production methods. Additionally, they engaged Michel Roland, a renowned international wine consultant, to guide their efforts. This infusion of expertise and innovation marked the beginning of a new chapter for Armenian winemaking.
Founded in 2003, Karas Wines meticulously selected prime vineyard sites near Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, at the base of the awe-inspiring Mount Ararat. The vineyards benefit from the region’s fertile black volcanic soils and elevations ranging from 400 to 1,100 meters, providing optimal conditions for cultivating high-quality grapes. Driven by a dedication to excellence, Karas Wines is committed to crafting wines that pay tribute to Armenia’s rich vinous heritage while appealing to modern palates. The combination of abundant sunlight and volcanic soil endows their grapes with exceptional character, reflecting the distinctive Armenian terroir in every bottle.
