Winery
Karas is recognized as the foremost winery in Armenia, strategically nestled in the picturesque Ararat Valley, beneath the majestic presence of Mount Ararat. Owned by the Eurnekian family, Karas Wines embodies a blend of sustainability, rich family heritage, and winemaking expertise. The name “Karas,” which translates to “amphora” in Armenian, honors the ancient clay vessels that have been an integral part of local winemaking for over 6,000 years.
While Armenia boasts a winemaking tradition that spans millennia, the adoption of modern production techniques has been gradual—until the arrival of Karas Wines. The transformation of the winery began with the hiring of a talented Argentine winemaker from Mendoza, who was instrumental in modernizing their production processes. To further bolster their advancements, the renowned wine consultant Michel Roland joined the team, facilitating a fusion of time-honored practices with innovative methods. This partnership signaled the dawn of a new chapter in Armenian winemaking.
Established in 2003, Karas Wines meticulously selected prime vineyard locations close to Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, at the foot of the breathtaking Mount Ararat. These vineyards thrive in the region’s fertile black volcanic soils, situated at altitudes ranging from 400 to 1,100 meters, which are ideal for growing high-quality grapes. Moreover, the Ararat Valley’s climate—characterized by hot summers and cold, dry winters—provides excellent conditions for vine cultivation. Karas is dedicated to producing wines that honor Armenia’s ancient winemaking legacy while addressing modern preferences. With an abundance of sunlight and distinctive volcanic soil, the grapes develop a unique flavor profile, beautifully reflecting the exceptional Armenian terroir in every bottle.
