Description
Wine House
At Karas Wines, sustainability, family tradition, and expertise converge in an Armenian winery nestled beneath the ever-majestic gaze of Mount Ararat. The mission is to craft world-class wines from own vineyards in Armavir, Armenia. The name of the winery, “Karas,” signifies ‘amphora’ in Armenian, a sacred clay vessel that has been used here for winemaking for over 6,000 years. Combined with Armenia’s ancient oenological culture, this inspires the winery to chart the future of the birthplace of wine while striving to reclaim its position as a producer of the world’s most coveted wines.
Terroir
Situated in the shadow of the sacred Mount Ararat, Armavir, with its venerable terroir, was a natural choice to begin the story of Karas Wines. The history of Armavir dates back to the Bronze Age, as evidenced by the ancient clay vessels, known as “karasses,” discovered 6,000 years ago in the Areni-1 cave, just a stone’s throw from the winery. Alongside other oenological archaeological findings, this establishes Armenia as the world’s oldest winemaking culture. While history is deeply rooted in this project, Karas Wines also recognizes the importance of responsible stewardship for the future. Thanks to Armavir’s exceptional terroir – favorable volcanic soils and a unique climate with significant temperature variations – Karas Wines adheres to a sustainable and organic philosophy, in line with Bioma practices, to ensure their vineyards remain healthy and free from chemical additives.
