Winery
Karas is recognized as Armenia’s leading winery, strategically located in the Ararat Valley with a majestic view of Mount Ararat. Owned by the Eurnekian family, Karas Wines stands at the intersection of sustainability, family heritage, and viticultural expertise. The name “Karas,” meaning “amphora” in Armenian, refers to the ancient clay vessels that have been an essential part of winemaking in this region for more than 6,000 years.
Although Armenia has an ancient winemaking tradition, it took a long time for modern production techniques to be introduced, until Karas Wines entered the scene. The company’s transformation began with the appointment of an experienced Argentine winemaker from Mendoza, who played a key role in modernizing their production processes. To further strengthen their efforts, the world-renowned wine consultant Michel Rolland was brought in to guide innovation, combining traditional methods with advanced expertise. This collaboration marked the beginning of a new era for Armenian winemaking.
Founded in 2003, Karas Wines carefully selected exceptional vineyard sites near Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. The vineyards thrive on the region’s rich black volcanic soils, at elevations ranging from 400 to 1,100 meters, providing ideal conditions for cultivating premium grapes. In addition, the climate of the Ararat Valley—characterized by hot summers and cold, dry winters—creates optimal conditions for vine growth. Karas is dedicated to producing wines that pay tribute to Armenia’s ancient winemaking heritage while meeting contemporary demands. Thanks to abundant sunshine and distinctive volcanic soils, the grapes develop a unique flavor profile, reflecting the exceptional Armenian terroir in every bottle.
