Karas Kraki Ktor Syrah Alluvial 2022

Karas Kraki Ktor Syrah Alluvial is a distinctive Armenian red wine, originating from the renowned Ararat Valley in the Armavir region. In this historic wine-growing area, the unique combination of soil and climate creates ideal conditions for viticulture. This wine is made from 100% Syrah grapes, which are hand-harvested in mid-September during the early morning hours to preserve maximum freshness and quality. After harvest, a careful double manual sorting process takes place, ensuring that only the finest grapes are selected for this premium wine. The vinification process is artisanal and highly precise. The selected grapes undergo micro-vinification in small 400-kilogram batches, allowing optimal control over the wine’s quality and character. This is followed by fermentation and maceration under controlled temperatures for approximately 22 days. This extended process ensures deep extraction of color, aromas, and tannins, contributing to the wine’s rich structure and complexity.

With an alcohol percentage of 14%, the Karas Kraki Ktor Alluvial is perfectly balanced, elegantly combining power and finesse, with a refined and characterful flavor profile.

Flavor character Karas Kraki Ktor Syrah Alluvial

This Syrah is characterized by a deep ruby-red to purplish color, immediately indicating concentration and intensity. On the nose, the wine reveals complex aromas of ripe dark fruit such as blackberries and black cherries, harmoniously complemented by spicy notes of pepper and other spices, along with a subtle earthy minerality derived from the alluvial soil. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and powerful, offering a beautiful balance between ripe fruit, fresh acidity, and firm yet elegant tannins. The finish is long and layered, with refined spicy and lightly smoky nuances.

As a versatile gastronomic wine, Karas Kraki Ktor Syrah Alluvial is an excellent match for grilled red meats such as entrecôte or ribeye, as well as lamb dishes, stews, and game. It also pairs exceptionally well with aged cheeses and barbecue dishes, while its spicy character makes it suitable for dishes with rich, full-bodied sauces. For the best tasting experience, it is recommended to serve the wine at a temperature of 16–18°C. Allowing it to breathe slightly, for example by decanting, will further enhance its aromas and flavors.

Description

Winery

Karas is recognized as Armenia’s leading winery, strategically located in the Ararat Valley with a majestic view of Mount Ararat. Owned by the Eurnekian family, Karas Wines stands at the intersection of sustainability, family heritage, and viticultural expertise. The name “Karas,” meaning “amphora” in Armenian, refers to the ancient clay vessels that have been an essential part of winemaking in this region for more than 6,000 years.

Although Armenia has an ancient winemaking tradition, it took a long time for modern production techniques to be introduced, until Karas Wines entered the scene. The company’s transformation began with the appointment of an experienced Argentine winemaker from Mendoza, who played a key role in modernizing their production processes. To further strengthen their efforts, the world-renowned wine consultant Michel Rolland was brought in to guide innovation, combining traditional methods with advanced expertise. This collaboration marked the beginning of a new era for Armenian winemaking.

Founded in 2003, Karas Wines carefully selected exceptional vineyard sites near Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. The vineyards thrive on the region’s rich black volcanic soils, at elevations ranging from 400 to 1,100 meters, providing ideal conditions for cultivating premium grapes. In addition, the climate of the Ararat Valley—characterized by hot summers and cold, dry winters—creates optimal conditions for vine growth. Karas is dedicated to producing wines that pay tribute to Armenia’s ancient winemaking heritage while meeting contemporary demands. Thanks to abundant sunshine and distinctive volcanic soils, the grapes develop a unique flavor profile, reflecting the exceptional Armenian terroir in every bottle.
