Hungarian Wine

Hungary may not be the first country that comes to mind when you think of a good glass of wine. Nevertheless, winegrowing in Hungary is one of the oldest in Europe. The history of wine production has a starting point in Roman times. Over the years, the country has further developed into one of the greater wine products in Europe. At the moment, Hungary is only ahead of France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany and Romania based on total wine production. A decent 7th place. We understand that all too well at Drinkrituals.nl. The Hungarian has a rich history and you can taste this history.

Viticulture in Hungary is spread all over the country. Almost every region in the country has its own vineyard or winery, but the majority of wine production takes place in puszta Alfold. This is an area between the Danube and the Tisza. The city of Eger in particular is a major producer. Nice detail: several wine cellars have been incorporated in the mountains around Eger. These wine cellars are carved out of the tuff and hundreds of wines are matured here. In total there are 22 wine regions in Hungary, spread over 3 zones and 6 larger regions.

Taste the Hungarian culture

In many European cities, the influence of French, Spanish, Italian and even German winemakers is growing. It is no different in Hungary. Many wineries are bought by foreign investors and they often bring their own methods. Yet a large part of the Hungarian wine culture has been preserved. This has to do with the authentic quality wines that were previously produced there. Today, well-known grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Merlot are also used for the production of wines, but Hungary continues to distinguish itself. The Hungarian grape varieties Furmint, Kadarka and Kékfrankos are still processed in large numbers. This is therefore very interesting for wine lovers who want to drink something different than the standard French Merlot or Chardonnay.

The grape varieties

In order to meet international tastes, Hungary mainly works with modern grape varieties. The native grape varieties are nevertheless still very popular. Especially the white grape varieties are well represented. Some of the most common grape varieties are therefore: Furmint (a strong, acidic white grape), Olaszrizling (a light yellowish, slightly aromatic grape) and the Cserszegi fuszeres. This is a very powerful, spicy wine grape. In addition, the Kadarka is still widely used. The Kadarka is a traditional grape from which a tannic red wine is made. This grape is very sensitive to rot and good care is therefore crucial.
