“We produced new wine, and we decided people could name it for us. So, we poured the wine into a bottle, we photographed it and posted the picture on social media, and then we asked people to help us come up with a name for the wine.”
It was during last year when everyone was living the dream of revolution in Armenia. The Gevorkian winery was inspired by the celebration of people’s free will and thus they decided to ask wine lovers to come up with a name for the new wine.
The idea resonated with a lot of wine lovers especially on Facebook. The post got over 1K comments. Since, the winemakers also promised to type the name, surname, and signature of the person suggesting the best name for the wine on the bottle, a lot of people thought they had to participate in the challenge.
In the end, the name “Garoun” suggested by Vigen Avetis won. As promised, the Gevorkian winery made sure to type the author’s name, surname, and signature on the label. So now, over 30K wine bottles have got Vigen’s name and signature on them.
What makes Garoun special?
Well, first of all, the name. And it’s not about the word “Garoun” itself but the fact that it was suggested by a wine lover. Let’s admit the fact that few wineries and winemakers go beyond the limits of wine branding and company image and ask their followers on social media to come up with a name.
It must be really heart-warming and very inspiring for a wine lover to be asked a favor like this.
Another thing that makes Garoun so special is the bottle itself (not the wine, yet). Usually, Armenian wines have the typical, so-called traditional images on wine labels such as an old emblem or grapevines. Garoun wine’s label seems to portray the colorful Yerevan with its warm architecture and style. The label design is outstanding and very fresh just like the wine flavor itself.
But this is not all yet. Garoun with its bright colors and fresh flavor can be a great choice for friends and family gatherings. Garoun would be perfect as a picnic wine and it’s also easy to open due to the screw cap. This means that you can open the wine whenever and wherever you want to even if you don’t have a corkscrew with you.
Pushing the limits has been and is going to be one of the main principles of Gevorkian winery. The family-owned winery presents a number of wine collections including but not limited to “365 wines,” “Mi Tas” collection, and “Ariats collection.” We are going to cover all these collections in our upcoming blog posts. So make sure to stay tuned for more.
As for Garoun, it comes in two types Garoun White made from 100% Kangun grape variety and Garoun Red from Haghtanak grape variety. The White is very light and smooth and can be served as is without any food pairings. However, if you are into pairing while wine with certain dishes, then you can try serving it with cold appetizers and seafood salads. Also, this wine can go well with sliced fish and cold fish appetizers.
It is recommended to serve the Garoun White at 8-12°C.
