Croatian Wine

Croatia has developed in recent years into an excellent wine country. It may not be the first country when you think of wine, but the country has a wine history dating back even before Christ. There are more than 17000 wineries in Croatia. In general, these wineries are spread over three wine regions; the coastal region, the continental eastern and the continental western regions. The climate in Croatia is ideal for wine production and in combination with the fertile soil, excellent wines are produced. Due to the different climatic conditions in the country, there are also major differences in the grape varieties. Every Croatian wine therefore has a unique taste.

The Croatian wines are produced by passionate winemakers, where authenticity and quality are of paramount importance. To date, Croatian wines are gaining popularity mainly inland, but there is the intention to enter the foreign borders. Several wine grape varieties are internationally recognized. There are about 60 different Croatian native grape varieties. Interesting detail: the three largest grape varieties account for more than 45% of the total wine production in Croatia. The difference between the grapes is mainly in the number of hours of sunshine and the temperatures.

Renowned wineries

The Croatian wines are all produced in renowned wineries. The passion for the profession and the love for wine makes the end result unique at all times. At Drinkrituals.com we share this passion and that’s why we like to share the most special wineries with you. These wineries define Croatian wine culture. A sampling of some of our favorite wineries:

  • Vina Carić: A winery run by the Carić family. They mainly produce white and red wines. This winery is located on one of the larger Croatian islands, Hvar. South of Split. The vineyards of the Carić family are spread across the island. The winemaker is characterized by his liberal way of working. In general, the white Bogdanuša grape and the red Plavac Mali grape are used.
  • Kabola: This is one of the oldest wineries in Croatia. The family business has been around since 1881 and they are still actively producing top quality wines. The wine is characterized by the soil where the grapes grow. This soil consists mainly of clay. This ensures the local identity of the wines. The owner’s passion is translated into the wine that truly reflects the region and climate. The grape varieties used are the Istarska Malvazija and the Teran.
  • Medea: This winery was named after a sorceress from Greek mythology, but the wines are true representatives of Croatian wine culture. Medea is one of the largest wineries in Istria. In addition, the climate is very favorable in this part of Croatia. Warm, dry summers and more than 2200 hours of sunshine per year. The winters are also doable, little to no snow. The Istarska Malvazija and the Teran are also used at Medea.
