Winery
Karas stands as Armenia’s leading winery, ideally situated in the scenic Ararat Valley, under the watchful eye of the iconic Mount Ararat. Owned by the Eurnekian family, Karas Wines blends a commitment to sustainability with a rich heritage and deep winemaking expertise. The name “Karas,” meaning “amphora” in Armenian, pays tribute to the ancient clay vessels used in local winemaking for over 6,000 years.
Armenia has a long-standing winemaking tradition, but the integration of modern production techniques has taken time. Karas Wines spearheaded this shift by bringing on board an experienced Argentine winemaker from Mendoza, who played a pivotal role in modernizing their approach. To further enhance their production, they partnered with renowned wine consultant Michel Roland, who helped merge traditional Armenian practices with contemporary innovations. This collaboration marked the beginning of a new era for Armenian winemaking.
Founded in 2003, Karas Wines carefully chose vineyards near Yerevan, the capital, nestled at the base of the majestic Mount Ararat. These vineyards flourish in the region’s nutrient-rich black volcanic soils, located at altitudes between 400 and 1,100 meters—ideal for cultivating premium grapes. The Ararat Valley’s climate, with hot summers and cold, dry winters, creates optimal growing conditions for vines. Karas is committed to crafting wines that honor Armenia’s ancient winemaking traditions while appealing to modern tastes. The abundant sunlight and unique volcanic soil shape the grapes’ distinctive flavor profile, offering a true expression of Armenian terroir in each bottle.
