Winery
Karas is celebrated as Armenia’s premier winery, located in the breathtaking Ararat Valley, under the imposing presence of Mount Ararat. Owned by the Eurnekian family, Karas Wines combines a commitment to sustainability with deep family traditions and expert winemaking. The name “Karas” translates to “amphora” in Armenian, referencing the ancient clay vessels that have been used in local winemaking for over 6,000 years. Armenia’s winemaking history stretches back even further, with over 6,200 years of tradition, deeply intertwined with the nation’s cultural heritage.
Although Armenia has a winemaking legacy that spans thousands of years, the modernization of production practices took time to fully develop. Karas Wines led the charge in revitalizing this ancient craft. The winery’s transformation was initiated with the recruitment of an experienced Argentine winemaker from Mendoza, who brought modern techniques and fresh ideas to the process. To enhance their work, they partnered with world-renowned wine consultant Michel Roland, blending centuries-old Armenian winemaking customs with contemporary innovations. This collaboration marked the beginning of a new era in Armenian wine production.
Founded in 2003, Karas Wines carefully selected prime vineyard sites just outside Yerevan, Armenia’s capital, nestled at the base of the magnificent Mount Ararat. The vineyards thrive in rich black volcanic soil, located at altitudes between 400 and 1,100 meters, creating ideal conditions for cultivating top-quality grapes. The Ararat Valley, with its intense summer heat and cold, dry winters, offers perfect growing conditions for the vines. Karas Wines is devoted to crafting wines that honor Armenia’s deep-rooted winemaking traditions while catering to modern tastes. The region’s plentiful sunshine and volcanic soil contribute to the unique flavor profile of the grapes, delivering a true reflection of Armenian terroir in every bottle.
