Armenia is seen as the birthplace of wine, the country where wine-making started centuries ago.

According to the Bible, Noah’s Ark stranded on Mount Ararat after the flood. The mountain was a sacred place for the inhabitants of this region centuries ago. The mountain is nowadays in Turkey. Somewhere in the area of present-day Armenia, Noah would have planted the first grape vine after he had come down the mountain. Subsequently, viticulture was spread throughout this area, later also in the Middle East and in the Mediterranean countries.

During excavations in the Areni-1 cave in the Armenian village of Areni (2011), archaeologists found a 6100-year-old wine press, according to many archaeologists and historians, the oldest in the world.
